FAQs

Log Cabins questions answered

What's the difference between a log cabin and a garden room?
Log cabins use stacked solid timber walls (typically 28mm to 70mm thick), giving a distinctive traditional aesthetic. Garden rooms use timber-frame or SIP construction with cladding β€” wider design flexibility and higher insulation values. Both can be year-round if properly specified.
How much does a log cabin cost?
Log cabins range from Β£4,000 for a small 3x3m kit cabin with basic spec, up to Β£30,000+ for larger insulated cabins with quality glazing and full installation. Premium twin-skin insulated cabins are at the higher end.
Are log cabins insulated?
Standard log cabins (single-skin solid timber) are not particularly insulated β€” wall U-values are around 1.0-1.5 W/mΒ²K. For year-round use we recommend either twin-skin insulated log cabins, or post-installation internal insulation with battened studwork and rigid insulation.
Do log cabins need treatment?
Yes β€” exterior timber needs treatment every 2 to 5 years depending on exposure and product. Untreated log cabins go silver-grey naturally; some clients prefer this look. We can pre-treat all elevations at install and advise on long-term maintenance.
How long do log cabins last?
A well-maintained log cabin lasts 30 to 50+ years. The critical factors are roof detailing (overhangs that protect walls from rain), foundation height (off the ground to prevent rot), and ongoing timber treatment.
